Western Digital has launched the VelociRaptor hard drives in the Indian market. The new release is the successor of its 10,000 RPM SATA “Raptor” series of drives. They deliver a 35 percent performance increase and are packed with twice the capacity.

It features a capacity of 300GB and is built into a 2.5-inch enterprise form factor. The 2.5-inch WD VelociRaptor drive is enclosed in the IcePack, a 3.5-inch mounting frame with a built-in heat sink. The IcePack keeps the drive cool. (more…)

LimeWire is a peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P) client for the Java Platform, which uses the Gnutella network to locate files as well as share files. Released under the GNU General Public License, LimeWire is free software. It also encourages the user to pay a fee, which will then give the user access to LimeWire PRO. SingTel and three of its telco associates have confirmed they will bring Apple’s iPhone to Singapore, India, the Philippines, and Australia.

SingTel in Singapore, India’s Bharti Airtel, the Philippines’ Globe Telecom and Australia’s Optus said they will bring the popular device to their respective countries “later this year”, although SingTel could not specify whether this would be in the third or fourth quarter of the year. (more…)

File sharing network offers legit option

Limewire has taken the wraps off its DRM-free music store, allowing users to acquire music downloads through a legitimate paid-for channel.

The file-sharing network’s LimeWire Store is widely seen as an effort to draw revenue from users more often accustomed to downloading pirate copies.

Limewire will provide a button next to each track on its P2P network, inviting initially US users to buy a legitimate version stored centrally on the LimeWire Store.

Users can also buy tracks direct from Limewire’s online store at 99 cents each.

Vista update

Microsoft has released a service update for all versions of its Windows Vista operating system.
The computer giant claims that the update improves the stability, security and performance of the software.

The update, or service pack, includes some fixes released before now and adds many new ones as well.

Microsoft has warned that the update could clash with some security software and other programs customers may have installed on their machine.

PALO ALTO, California: Facebook has announced the introduction of privacy controls that give users of the social-networking site the ability to preserve social distinctions between friends, family and co-workers.

Executives at Facebook said Tuesday here that the changes would allow the site’s more than 67 million users to control what was seen by their friends, and friends of their friends.

The company was founded in 2004 as a social site for students at Harvard University and spread quickly to other colleges and eventually into workplaces. Its popularity stems from how the site conveniently allows users to share details of their lives with selected friends online.
