MUMBAI: Big 92.7 FM in association with Heroes Project India, has kicked off a week long HIV and AIDS awareness campaign.
The campaign which will be carried out both on-air and on-ground will focus on spreading the right information and will urge people to stop discrimination towards HIV affected patients.
As part of on-air promotions, the Chennai station will air eight questions related to HIV and AIDS everyday, asking listeners to sms the answer. The answer will be explained by a HIV affected person who will also explain the reality about HIV and AIDS.

Most people know that smoking causes cancer, heart attack, lung disease and impotence. Now, a study on Asian men has revealed that cigarettes also lead to baldness.
Male-pattern baldness runs in families and is influenced by male sex hormones and some environmental factors such as diet and stress. Researchers are now saying that smoking also causes hair loss by lowering the supply of blood to the hair follicles.

NEW DELHI, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) — Some 1.08 percent of the one billion Indians have secured medical insurance cover since 1986 when health insurance was first introduced in the country, according to a research report issued by India’s National Insurance Academy.
Shortage of hospitals and insurance providers, poverty, lack of co-ordination between hospitals and insurance firms and people’s belief in destiny have been cited as some of the reasons for the poor response, said the report carried in the Times of India newspaper Sunday.

New Delhi (PTI): About 1.2 crore poor people in the country will be provided with health insurance cover in a year and the scheme will be expanded to include all sections under Below Poverty Line (BPL) over five years, Government told the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
The BPL people will be provided with smart cards and they can avail of doctors’ consultations and medicines up to Rs 30,000 free, Minister for Chemicals Ram Vilas Paswan said in reply to questions.
The move will cost Rs 3,500 crore to the state exchequer, he said.

Women who are active during pregnancy are likely to have active babies, reveals a new study that shows why exercise is important for pregnant women.
The study, which ruled out any biological factors behind this, said active pregnant mothers were likely to continue doing exercise after birth and this would encourage their children to get into good habits.
Scientists at Bristol University gathered data on 5,500 children between 11 and 12 years and recorded their activities over the course of at least three days.

A team of international researchers has carried out a study and found that doing the right kind of brain exercises can slow down the mind’s deterioration by about a decade, The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday.

The most common blood type in Indians seems to provide better protection against the most deadly form of malaria. British scientists have found that people with blood group O – around 38% of the Indian population – are naturally protected from some of the most severe forms of the disease, which kills around two million people annually across the globe.
A team from Edinburgh University, with researchers in the US, Mali and Kenya, studied African children and found that those with this blood type were two-thirds less likely to experience coma or life-threatening anaemia conditions synonymous with severe malaria.

According to a new European Union-funded study, organically produced food is better than ordinary food. Organic food like fruits, vegetables and milk, contain more nutrients and may contain higher concentrations of cancer fighting and heart beneficial antioxidants.
Researchers said that the £12m four-year study’s complete findings will be published within next one year.
Professor Carlo Leifert of the Tesco Centre for Organic Agriculture based at Newcastle University, UK, who with his team are working on the EU funded project called the Quality Low Input Food (QLIF) project, announced the findings.

New York: A derivative of vitamin A may help cut down the risk of lung cancer in former smokers by reducing the growth of lung cells, a new study has found.
Former smokers remain at elevated risk for lung cancer as lung cells that were damaged during years of smoking may continue to grow and evolve into cancer even after a person has quit smoking.
