Shelley Matheson

SFU student Shelley Matheson of North Vancouver took home the regional Miss Greater Vancouver World title July 20 at Miss BC World 2008, one of Canada’s largest pageants.

Matheson, who is pursuing a double major in criminology and English, will join this year’s overall winner Hasti Vahidi of Vancouver and three other B.C. regional winners at Miss World Canada 2009 in Toronto next March, after which the next stop is Miss World.

Contestants from around the province took part in the pageant, which raised more than $13,000 for the Cops for Cancer charity. The contestants were each judged on personal expression in sports wear and an evening gown, a private interview with the judging panel and an onstage interview in the final showcase.

Miss BC World 2007, SFU student Shaela Rae Wlodarczyk, wrote and performed a song at this year’s pageant dedicated to cancer survivors and those currently fighting the disease.

Miss World 2009, the 59th Miss World pageant, will be held on December 12, 2009 in Johannesburg, South Africa, where Ksenia Sukhinova of Russia will crown her successor at the end of this event. About 110 contestants are expected to attend the event.

To add a little something to my title: Pretty and Unphotoshopped Pictures of Miss World 2009 (since her skin doesn’t look like it’s made of plastic and the minuscule imperfections she’s got were not airbrushed away)!

And on a figure related note, Ksenia appears to pretty thin (at least compared to other Beauty Queens), tall (5?10?) and modelesque.

Love Aaj Kal stormed the desi box office in North America and the United Kingdom, grossing over $2 million last weekend and became the first Bollywood superhit of the year. With the $1.2 million opening in North America, the romantic comedy is on its way to becoming the biggest hit for Saif Ali Khan.

Exhibitors in the US say they are amazed that a film with Saif could be a huge draw. The initial prediction was for a $1 million run (total) in North America. But as the film’s release approached, the buzz kept growing.

The music (Pritam) also caught on. Many theatres have reported repeat business. It is a big movie for desi date crowds, exhibitors say. (more…)

1. Look at the floorboard; you’ll see 3 pedals. From left to right, they are: Clutch, Brake, Gas (Accelerate/Accelerator).

2. Study the simple diagram on the top of the gearshift, which will show you where the gears are. In most new cars, this will look like a three-legged H.
