Ranchi, March 3: Finance secretary Rajbala Verma today assured teachers that she would look into their demand for a salary structure similar to the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.
The teachers had been threatening an agitation if their pay demands were not met.
Both secondary and primary schoolteachers had decided to cease work.
A 12-member delegation, comprising both secondary and primary schoolteachers met the finance secretary at Bal Krishna School to protest what they called the state’s discriminatory attitude.
“We had decided to protest and strike, as the government so far has failed us. But after the secretary’s assurance we are ready to wait further before we take another step,” said the general secretary of Akhil Jharkhand Prathamik Shikshak Sangh, Salim Sahay Tigga.
He added that according to the Sixth Pay Commission regulation, teachers are supposed to be paid a basic of Rs 4,200. But after the release of the commission notification, there was a state revision that mentioned that primary schoolteachers would be paid only Rs 2,800.
Ganga Prasad Yadav, a teacher of Bal Krishna High School, said that the finance secretary cleared have so far soothed nerves.
“We have received a new copy of the decision from the finance secretary that was distributed among the teachers at today’s meeting,” Yadav added.
