GOA: Workers of the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) had a showdown with the labour commissioner and managing director of the corporation over the delay in the implementation of the sixth pay commission-recommended scales.
Following an ongoing dharna by the KTC Drivers’ and Allied Employees’ Association since February 24, in protest of the delay in implementation of the new scales, the workers and KTC’s managing director were called for negotiations before the labour commissioner on Monday.
However, the workers were angered when they were told by the concerned official that the files are moving and going through a certain process before implementation of the scales’.
The workers and officials got into heated arguments that rocked the Shram Shakti Bhavan, where the office of the labour commissioner is located. The workers walked out of the meeting shouting slogans and pledging to continue their dharna.
On the other hand, the labour commissioner and managing director of the KTC headed towards the Assembly complex to discuss the proceedings of the meeting with higher authorities. The officials have fixed the next meeting with the workers for March 5.
Around 350 KTC workers have been camping at the traffic island located before the bus stand in Panaji for the last six days to stress upon their demand of immediate implementation of sixth pay commission scales.
General Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Christopher Fonseca, who is backing the workers, said, “If the KTC workers’ demand is not met after the meeting on March 5, we will intensify the struggle. The AITUC will also join them and large numbers will come onto the streets.”
