LUDHIANA: Students and their parents protested at MGM Public School, Dugri here on Wednesday against the fee hike. On the other hand, president of the school management justified the hike by claiming that after the sixth pay commission’s recommendations, they have no other source to generate funds.
An annoyed parent argued, How can school revise the fee simply to pay salary to their teachers Another parent said in times of economic slowdown even the private sector employees are not expecting any salary hike and went on to add, Our profit percentage in business has gone down and this revised fee structure would be an added burden on us.
Another parent alleged that the school had doubled the fee and never gave a second thought to the fact that how will those parents manage who have two kids studying in the same school.
The new academic session of the school begins from March 2 and students were given result here on Wednesday. The protest got ignited when they were asked to pay fee for the next session.
Gajjan Singh, president of the school management said, From last five years we never revised the fee structure, but this time we are compelled to do so because of sixth pay commission, as being a private institute we have no other alternative to generate funds. He went to explain that they were paying salaries to teachers and spending on the maintenance and provided facilities to the students with the fee collected.
Talking about the revised fee structure the president said, We have revised Rs 100 in tuition fee and some amount in annual charges, which varies from class to class and the allegations of doubling the fee is absolutely baseless as we know the problems of parents and we do not want to put undue burden on them.
The sixth pay commission suggested a 50% raise for school teachers. Moreover, schools have also been asked to pass arrears to the teachers from 2006.
