Tata Teleservices launched Photon+, their high speed wireless broadband service in Bangalore today. The company claims that this service will provide speeds of a maximum of 2.4 Mbps, and average browsing speeds of 300 kbps and above. At this point in time, the high speed service is available only in Bangalore, Chennai, and certain north-eastern states, but Mr. Sanjeev Khera, COO-Karnataka, stated that Tata Teleservices intends to cover the ten largest cities in India by the end of March, and over forty cities by the end of May, 2009.
Two devices have been launched under the Photon+ brand. The first is a USB dongle that costs Rs. 3,500 and comes with three tariff plans. The cheapest is Rs. 700 for 0.5 GB of data, and there’s an unlimited plan at Rs. 1,500 per month. The second device is a combined modem-cum-wireless router, aimed at SME’s and business users. This device does not have any unlimited
plans on offer.
At the launch, we were able to briefly test the devices, and speeds ranged between 700 kb to 1.3 Mbps. Video streaming from BBC, Youtube, and CNN worked with practically no buffering as well. Browsing was quite fast, and Tata’s claims of mobile broadband seem to be reasonably accurate, but we’ll defer judgment till we run the devices through our comprehensive review.
