Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir’s main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Saturday asked the Omar Abdullah government to implement the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission in the state without further delay.

“The government must fulfil the commitment made during the elections on the implementation of the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission,” a PDP spokesperson said here.

The spokesperson said the “genuine demand” of the state government employees can’t be “ignored or delayed as their expectations have been raised before the elections through a series of pronouncements”.

He said the state government had “long back accepted the principle of equal pay for equal work and could not wriggle out of that arrangement now on any pretext”.

More than 400,000 employees have struck work twice earlier and have threatened to go on a three-day strike from Monday pressing for their demand.

The government says it requires Rs.3,100 crore (Rs.31 billion) to implement the recommendations.

“The government should avoid the path of confrontation with employees,” the PDP spokesperson said, adding any prolongation of confrontation could harm the interests of the state.
