LUCKNOW: It was time for the employees of UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) to burst into cheers as its top management gave its nod to revision of their wages in consonance with the 6th pay commission on Thursday, a day after the state government opened its purse to employees of local bodies, junior doctors and teachers for the same.
The management agreed in principle that the employees would be given the scale as per the commission’s recommendation with effect from January 1, 2006. The decision was taken after a meeting with office bearers of Rajya Vidyut Karamchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti, an association of engineers and power officials, which spearheaded the agitation and had threatened of going on a work boycott in case the wage revision is not done.
The revision is set to put an additional burden of Rs 35 crore immediately on the loss making corporation having on its rolls 45,000 employee. The corporation will also have to shell out an extra Rs 1,600 crore in the form of arrears for the power employees.
Meanwhile, UPPCL has decided to carry out a rigorous drive to check meter load in multi-storey buildings, shopping complexes and multiplexes in the state. Directions to this effect were issued by chairman-cum-managing director, UPPCL, Navneet Sehgal on Thursday.
Addressing a meeting of senior UPPCL officials, Sehgal said that invariably it has been found that the builders apply for meter of lower load even though they go on to construct big buildings where power consumption is far more.
It has also been decided that the glow sign boards of various commercial organisations be checked for their power consumption and tariff be fixed accordingly. Sehgal also asked the engineers and senior officials to carry out regular drive against power defaulters and see that power pilfering is minimised.
