This refers to the article about sixth pay commission by Dr. Farooq Peer. Employees feel that their demand about implementation of 6th pay commission is very genuine. It appears to be so. It has been more than a decade since pay was revised the last. Inflation rate all these years has been on the higher side and central government employees have already been extended the benefits. So if the employees are pressing for it, nobody should have any problems.
But the way Dr. Peer has justified the implementation of 6th pay commission is wrong. He has related the quality of education with remuneration that a college professor gets. College is a sacred institution and excellence must not be weighed by the wages. He has compared the earnings and infrastructure of teachers and colleges of J&k with those of West and other countries. He can’t compare the hard work and competence of teachers here with those of who serve outside. Our college lecturers are supposed to spend 40hrs/week in library to keep themselves abreast of the latest in their fields according to a UGC circular. I had gone through once but I have never seen it happen. I have myself been a student of same college where the author teaches. I don’t think we can match the standard of our colleges with those whose excellence is known the world over. I am not against wage enhancement, but what we really need is the commitment of our teachers towards nation building.
