KOCHI: Though the controversy over the reported shifting of the registered office of the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) from Kochi to Kollam has settled down with the Centre saying a ‘big no’ to the plans, another issue has started to affect the smooth functioning of the CEPCI.

The employees of the CEPCI had been waging a relentless war with the CEPCI management for the last several months demanding filling of vacancies, due promotions and implementation of the sixth Central Pay Commission recommendations.

According to the employees, the number of regular staff in the Kochi office was 20 till 1997, but it has come down to 13 due to retirements and resignations.

“Following this, the works handled by the existing employees have increased considerably.

Above all, we have got promotions 12 years back and have crossed the minimum of two scales of pay and designations, but neither our designation, post or scale of pay is changed for the last 12 years,” they said.

Stating that P C Thomas MP had written a letter to Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath urging him to look into the issue, the employees alleged that though they had submitted several representations to the management, it had failed to look into their grievances. The employees contended that despite the Centre issuing orders to all autonomous bodies and statutory bodies to implement the sixth Pay Commission recommendations, the CEPCI had not initiated any action so far.

However, when contacted, the top management officials of the CEPCI were not able to give a clear picture of the developments.

They said: “The administrative committee will look into the demands of employees.”
