SAN JOSE—Rescue teams in Costa Rica rushed Friday to find hundreds of missing people, including some 400 foreign tourists, stranded after a strong earthquake that left at least 14 dead.
The magnitude-6.1 quake shook the Central American nation Thursday, collapsing homes and setting off landslides that blocked major highways.
Rescue personnel desperately searched for victims near the Poas volcano, outside the capital San Jose, throughout the night and at 4:30 a.m. (1030 GMT) “a patrol confirmed that in the area of Cataratas there were 10 fatalities,” Red Cross spokesman Cristian Ana said.
