new delhi : Nearly 180 interns of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) practicing at Lok Nayak Hospital went on an indefinite strike on Thursday demanding revision of salary. Doctors claim that Central and the state government are doing nothing about the issue. Other medical colleges are likely to join the strike on Friday.
Doctors say that as per Government of India rules, salaries of interns has to be revised every two years but the government has not revised salaries for the past five years. “We are not getting our due share. In an RTI reply, we learnt that as per rules, the revision of salary has to be done in every two years and interns are entitled for 40% of total emoluments given to a junior resident,” said Dr Abhishek Bansal, representative of interns at MAMC and LN Hospital.
Interns of other Central and state government hospitals are likely to join the strike tomorrow. “We have been following this matter for a long time with the government. We get roughly Rs 5700/- per month, which is less than a group B or C employee. The salaries of junior residents have drastically increased after the implementation of sixth pay commission. So we should also get our share. But there has been no positive response from the government. University College of Medical Sciences doctors interning at GTB Hospital would be joining the strike on Friday,” said Soumyendro, representative of interns at GTB Hospital.
