Sixth Pay Commission: 27 graduates commissioned into military service

October 22nd, 2008

PUNE: Enhanced pay along with improved service conditions as a result of the Sixth Pay Commission were among the factors which saw all 27 nursing graduates of the 39th batch of College of Nursing (CoN) of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) being commissioned into the Military Nursing Services (MNS).

AFMC Commandant Lieutenant General S K Kaul and Deputy Commandant Major General G Rajagopal, in the presence of CoN Principal J A Fernandez, commissioned the graduates as lieutenants at a ceremony in the campus here on Tuesday.

Interestingly, not a single graduate of the batch (second-2008) opted out of the services as compared to the batch (first-2008) when seven graduates paid out of the armed forces. The year before, four graduates opted out and prior to those three graduates citing various reasons.

On the occasion, Lt Gen Kaul, reminded the graduates that they had been commissioned into the services at the right time after the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. He urged officers to lay stress on topmost patient care with compassion and humility each time and every time they attend a patient. Care should comprise psychological, social and spiritual in addition to medical care.

Maj Gen Rajagopal told Sakaal Times, “The sixth pay commission can be considered as one of the factors for the graduates not opting out. However, it has more to do with job security and better career prospects, which cannot be negated.”

“Yes! The pay commission was one of the motivating factors for some of us to continue in the services,” said Lt Brinda P. “There is something beyond the pay commission benefits such as love for the uniform, services and discipline,” said Lt Suman Rawat.

Till today, 970 nursing graduates have passed out of the campus and are serving in diverse parts of the country in difficult conditions, living up to their motto of ‘Service with a smile’.

Some of these graduates have been deputed to serve abroad as part of UN peacekeeping operations.
