Mysore (PTI): Dasara, Karnataka’s most prominent festival, began atop the Chamundi hills here with the centenarian Sri Shivakumara Swamiji of Siddaganga mutt inaugurating the event, marking the continuation of the tradition.

As the Swamiji got on to the dais and lit the traditional lamp to formally inaugurate this 600 year-old tradition, inherited by the Mysore Royal family, the gathering greeted the occasion with resounding applause.

The inauguration marks the showcasing of art and culture of Mysore in all its splendour which is a beautiful symbiosis of ancient and modern.

During the nine-day celebrations, the city will come alive with music, dance and drama festivals, food fairs, flower shows, youth festival, sports meets, exhibition and air show.

The city will transform into a fairyland with electricity department illuminating the palace, 200 odd heritage buildings and streets with six lakh bulbs of different colours.

The electricity department has also arranged laser show on the occasion. (http://www.hindu.com)
