Ranchi, Sep 29 (IANS) Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren Monday demanded an increased share of mineral royalty from the 13th Finance Commission.”Jharkhand should get an increased share of mineral royalty through an improved royalty regime based on market value,” Soren said while addressing a meeting with the members of the 13th Finance Commission.

“Jharkhand should get a special package as the second Finance Commission had granted the same to Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka,” he added. (more…)

After the Armed Forces expressed huge disappointment over the Sixth Pay Commission report and rejected it outright, the PMO intervened and formed a 3-member committee to look into their grievances.

After consulting with the PM, who is away on a foreign visit, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee formed a committee with two other members Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Defence Minister A K Antony. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee will head the committee. (more…)

NEW DELHI: The armed forces on Sunday expressed hope that the newly-constituted high-level ministerial committee will address their “genuine grievances” over the notification of their new pay scales.

“We have made our recommendations and the government has decided to set up a panel. So, let us see how the deliberations go… we are hopeful that it will look into our genuine and bonafide requests,” Army chief General Deepak Kapoor said after laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti in India Gate to mark the 181st Gunners Day. NEW DELHI: A day after defence minister A K Antony pulled up Navy Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta for crossing the line by refusing to accept the Sixth Pay Commission’s recommendations, the armed forces went on a damage-control mode, asserting that they had no differences with the government on the issue.

“I just want to clarify that this talk of differences between the armed forces and the government…I think that is not right,’’ Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor told reporters here after laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti to mark the Gunners Day. (more…)

Larger banks and employee productivity

It has become a fad to argue that a shakeout is inevitable in the Indian banking sector because only the larger banks can get to rule the roost. This is seen as necessary in the light of our opening up the banking sector in 2009. Is it true?.

In any democracy, armed forces officers have no business demanding parity with civil servants.

Some of the demands put forward by Armed Forces’ chiefs are unreasonable to say the least. The manner in which they chose to highlight this bordered on defiance of civilian authority.
Higher salaries are a constant demand of government employees. For the Armed Forces, these are justified given the harsh and dangerous nature of their job. (more…)
