New Delhi: Country’s top shuttlers Anup Sridhar and Saina Nehwal made a resounding start to their Thailand Open campaign at Bangkok on Wednesday, progressing to the pre-quaterfinals of the tournament.
However, India enjoyed a mixed outing today with as many as seven shuttlers crashing out of the tournament against only three, who made it to the pre-quaterfinals.
Olympic-bound Sridhar, who prevailed over Austrian Juergen Koch in the opening round, defeated Daren Liew of Malaysia 21-12 21-18 in the second round to set up a pre-quarterfinal clash against second seed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand on Thursday.
In the women’s singles first round, National Champion Saina stunned eight seed Elizabeth Cann of England 21-13, 21-5 in mere 20 minutes.
She will now face Nguyen Nhung Le Ngoc of Vietnam. Promising P Kashyap also sneaked into the pre-quarterfinals, with the help of a walkover conceded by his opponent, 11th seed Lee Yen Hui Kendrick of Singapore.
Kashyap, who beat Malaysian Allan Tai 21-13, 21-12 in the first round, will next face local favourite Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk.
Meanwhile, Ajay Jayaram squandered a golden opportunity to scalp a seed and went down 22-20, 22-20 to nine seed Zwiebler Marc of Germany in the second round.
Earlier in the day, Jayram defeated Hoang Nam Nguyen of Veitnam 21-10, 21-17 in the opening round.
It also turned out to be a disappointing day for Aditi Mutatkar, the other Indian female shuttler in the fray, as she was humiliated by Thailand’s Salakjit Ponsana 21-17, 21-1.
Among others Indians, who failed to the cross the first hurdle was National Champion Chetan Anand, Arvind Bhat, Anand Pawar, JBS Vidyadhar and Gurusai Dat.
