MUMBAI: In keeping with the trend in recent years, HSC students again jostled for space on the first merit list to a number of south Mumbai colleges, as their peers from other national boards like CBSE and ISC as also international boards like IB, beat them hollow. The first list for all senior colleges affiliated to Mumbai University was out on Monday evening.

Fifty percent of students who made it to HR College’s general merit list for premium courses such as Bachelor of Management Studies and Bachelor in Accountancy and Finance are from boards other than HSC. These courses have only 60 seats each.

To make it a level-playing field, one south Mumbai college even put up separate merit lists for HSC and non-HSC students. The HSC cut-off in this college was a good 10% lower than the non-HSC cut-off.

“Of all boards, CBSE has done the best when it comes to our merit list, followed jointly by IB and ISC. I feel that state board students haven’t been able to score the kind of marks that other boards have,’’ said HR College principal Indu Shahani.

At Jai Hind college, though, there are more HSC students on the first merit list this year than there were last year.

For the Bachelor of Management Studies course, Mumbai University has allowed colleges to put out a separate list for students from other boards like International Baccalaureate.
