An Umlazi student has won a scholarship from the Indian consulate in Durban to study at the University of Bangalore in India.

Thobela Conco, 19, received the Commonwealth Scholarship, which is awarded to a student who achieves marks of more than 80%, from the consulate as part of the annual scholarships it awards to South African students.

Conco, a student at the Durban University of Technology, was among 17 students from KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape who received scholarships.

She said she was ecstatic about being awarded the scholarship, which would help broaden her horizons.

Conco will study biotechnology. She said she couldn’t wait to begin her studies because of the advanced programme at the University of Bangalore.

“I can’t wait to experience the diversity of other cultures and other religions.

“Since they will be out of my comfort zone, I am looking forward to the challenge,” she said.

Nicholyn Dayanand of Pietermaritzburg was awarded a scholarship to study the Indian classical dance Bharatiyanatyam in Chennai.

Dayanand, who has been dancing since she was 11, said it was her passion and she now had an amazing opportunity to further her studies in Chennai.

Lee-Ann Madula, who will study psychology at the University of Bangalore, said she was fascinated and eager to go to India “especially after watching so many Bollywood movies”.

The Indian consul-general, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, said he was happy with the response the consulate had received.

“I spoke to the candidates and they are all confident young people looking forward to their studies in India.

“They have clear plans about their career advancement and are eager to impart the knowledge they acquire to South Africans,” he said.
