History
The University originally started as Central College in 1886 by British Government.It was endowed with the status of a University from Central College on July 10, 1964 by the government of the then State of Mysore to consolidate institutes of higher education in the city of Bangalore.
The Central College and The University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) constituted the original institutions under the umbrella of this university. With the promulgation of the Karnataka State Universities Ordinance of 1975, which aimed at bringing into uniformity all Universities in the State, the university lost its federal character and became an affiliated university. In 1973, the University moved to the Jnana Bharathi Campus located on 1,100 acres (4.5 km²) of land.
