BANGALORE: Deccan looks set for a second rechristening and a new brand positioning. Last year, the name had been changed from Air Deccan to Deccan, following its merger with Kingfisher Airlines. Now, new owner Vijay Mallya plans to prefix the word King or Kingfisher to the airline.

Sources say the name change will happen along with a repositioning of the brand, which will move the low-cost carrier a few shades up the value chain making it conceptually similar to Jet’s JetLite. The new brand will be launched shortly. We plan to position the new brand not as a low-cost carrier but a value-based carrier, a senior airline official said.

Mallya is likely to launch the new brand along with his IPL cricket team. He indicated that the makeover be done well before the IPL tournament starts, so that he can market the new brand during the tournament. A decision on the name will be taken once he (Mallya) is back from Australia, a source said.

File sharing network offers legit option

Limewire has taken the wraps off its DRM-free music store, allowing users to acquire music downloads through a legitimate paid-for channel.

The file-sharing network’s LimeWire Store is widely seen as an effort to draw revenue from users more often accustomed to downloading pirate copies.

Limewire will provide a button next to each track on its P2P network, inviting initially US users to buy a legitimate version stored centrally on the LimeWire Store.

Users can also buy tracks direct from Limewire’s online store at 99 cents each.

David_Archuleta

It was no secret that David Archuleta could sing – students and teachers had heard him belt out holiday carols during Spanish class and an opera aria at a school arts festival.

None of that was reason enough to believe the junior at Murray High School in Murray, Utah, would transform from a shy and impish 17-year-old to a fast-rising star on ” American Idol.”

“He giggles every time you confront him,” Archuleta’s 11th-grade English teacher Chantel Thackarey said. “I can’t believe how well he’s doing because he’s just so painfully shy.”

Week after week, Archuleta seems to outsing the competition on the top-rated Fox show, winning the hearts – and votes – of viewers (even if he forgot the lyrics of The Beatles’ “We Can Work It Out” last week).

PALO ALTO, California: Facebook has announced the introduction of privacy controls that give users of the social-networking site the ability to preserve social distinctions between friends, family and co-workers.

Executives at Facebook said Tuesday here that the changes would allow the site’s more than 67 million users to control what was seen by their friends, and friends of their friends.

The company was founded in 2004 as a social site for students at Harvard University and spread quickly to other colleges and eventually into workplaces. Its popularity stems from how the site conveniently allows users to share details of their lives with selected friends online.

Bluray Writer from LG

LG Electronics has today announced what the company claims is the “world’s fastest Blu-ray writer”. The GGW-H20L promises the fastest Blu-ray (BD) writing speed — 6x maximum.

The GGW-H20L is an IDE device that can be mounted on any existing desktop PC. It is learnt that while a normal CD can store up to 700MB, a double-layer BD can store up to 50GB data. To understand it better: data content of up to 73 CDs (approximately 35 Bollywood films) can be stored in one BD Media.

LG Electronics claims taking back-ups on the GGW-H20L that has 50GB storage capacity not only makes the task more easy but also more reliable as compared to a magnetic tape. Besides, large-sized software programs and designs can be stored on the GGW-H20L.
