Jet, Kingfisher and SpiceJet will increase fuel surcharge by Rs300 from Dec. 3. Air India will also charge Rs300 more while others are likely to follow suit as well

Leading private airlines along with state-run carrier Air India have decided to hike fares from Dec. 3 after oil marketing companies, including Reliance, raised Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices by over 14% on Friday.

Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and SpiceJet will increase fuel surcharge by Rs300 from Monday. Air India will also charge Rs300 more while others like Air Deccan, Go Air and IndiGo are also likely to announce a similar hike.

In Delhi, ATF will now cost 14.5% more at Rs 47,444.14 per kilolitre (KL) in December compared with Rs 41,417.33 per KL in November. In Mumbai, jet fuel prices are up 14.6% at Rs 49,061.13 per KL versus Rs 42,796.74 per KL in November.

ATF prices are revised at the beginning of every month based on the average international price in the previous month. Last month as a result of the increase in jet fuel prices, private carriers had increased fuel surcharge by Rs150 per ticket.

International air travel will also turn costlier if one happens to fly by Singapore Airlines. The airline said on Thursday that it will increase its fuel surcharge on all flights, including those operated by its unit SilkAir, beginning Dec. 4 because of rising jet fuel costs.

The surcharge on routes to Southeast Asian countries will rise to US $26 per flight from US $24, and the levy on flights to the US and Canada will rise to US $123 from US $104, the company said. For all other flights, the charge will rise to US $75 from US $67.

This is the second increase by Singapore Airlines in two months.

Reports also say that Australian carrier Qantas will follow suit and increase the fuel levies on all of its international flights. Most other airlines flying into Australia are also expected to hike fuel surcharge, and could hurt tourism.
