Kolkata: Candidates taking the West Bengal School Service Commission examination and the Council of Scientific and Educational Research (CSIR) examination conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) will have to choose between the two this year.
According to SSC officials, 3,000 students will suffer as the commission’s examination for recruitment in 2008 is on the same day as CISR exam for 2007. However, the SSC is not too keen on deciding on an alternative date.
The CSIR examination will be conducted in chemical, earth, atmospheric, ocean and planetary, life, mathematical and physical sciences.
The SSC exam process, to fill up 9,353 seats, has been designed to prevent impersonation. The procedure includes verification of photographs and signatures at almost all stages.
SSC sources in the commission said around 5 lakh candidates will be writing the examination this year.
“Both examinations and their purpose are quite different. While the SSC is conducted to appoint schoolteachers, CSIR candidates join colleges after they clear the exam,” said SSC Chairman Ronojit Basu.
“We had thought of rescheduling the exam for December 30, but the PSC Clerkship Examination is on the same day. On December 16, the UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) is to be conducted. So we cannot do much,” said Basu.
Last year, the examination, to fill about 20,000 vacancies, was conducted by the SSC and results were declared in October this year. Basu added that they wish to publish the results around the same time in 2008 as well.
Meanwhile, the SSC has run out of application forms and distribution of forms has been stalled till further announcement.
Reports of mild disturbances in banks, where the forms were being distributed, have trickled in.
