BANGALORE: Without a Government in place to negotiate, the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K) is likely to go by last year’s consensus formula for fee structure and sharing of the postgraduate medical and dental seats in its member colleges.

Under the consensus formula, 33 per cent of the seats were set aside for the government quota, which were offered to students with a 33 per cent fee concession.

The consortium has notified that its Post Graduate Entrance Test (COMED-K PGET 2008) will be held on January 27, 2008 for admission to postgraduate courses offered by colleges attached to the Karnataka Private Medical and Dental Colleges Association, and the Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges’ Association.

On Thursday, the association members decided to seek legal opinion on sticking to last year’s consensus formula. As the Supreme Court had approved the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Government and the private college associations, the Supreme Court will be approached again to get the MoU extended, COMED-K Executive Secretary S. Kumar told The Hindu.

The consortium will formally notify the new arrangement once the Supreme Court gives its nod, he said. The notification could be expected within the next two or three days.

Financial burden
Although the postgraduate admission process could be a smooth affair, the undergraduate admission is likely to run into rough weather. With the Government increasing the salaries of medical college teachers by almost 100 per cent, private colleges had to follow suit, which meant an additional financial burden of Rs. 3 crore, Dr. Kumar said.

He said the colleges could not transfer this load on to the students. But for a final word on the matter, the private colleges have to wait till a new Government assumes charge in the State.
