A chemical that causes garlic breath can protect against high blood pressure and heart disease, according to new research.
The allicin in garlic breaks down into hydrogen sulphide, which produces a smell from the breath and skin.
Researchers at Alabama University found the compound also causes the blood vessel walls to dilate, which reduces blood pressure.

The UK population will grow to more than 70 million over the next 24 years, according to official predictions.
By the year 2031 there will be about 71 million people living in Britain, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.
Researchers said if past trends continue, the population will increase from about 60 million in 2006 to 65 million in 2016 and pass 70 million in 2028.

Q2 bottom line up 27.9 per cent at Rs 409 cr.
Riding on the back of improved prices and accelerated growth in markets other than the US, Satyam Computer Services today reported a 27.9 per cent increase in consolidated net profit at Rs 409.1 crore (Indian GAAP) for the quarter ended September 30, 2007, as against Rs 319.81 crore in the corresponding quarter Last year.
Total income from services for the quarter grew 26.8 per cent at Rs 2,031.72 crore from Rs 1,601.88 crore in the previous corresponding quarter, while net profit witnessed a sequential increase of 8.1 per cent over the previous corresponding quarter.

Anil Ambani’s Reliance Power will be valued nearly two times its holding company, Reliance Energy, after the mega initial public offer. The notional value of Ambani’s personal wealth will also go up by at least Rs 42,000 crore.
In its prospectus, Reliance Power has said that it would dilute 11.5 per cent of the post-issue equity.
According to market estimates, the IPO, which will be the largest in the Indian market, is aiming to raise Rs 8,000 crore. This means the company will be valued at nearly Rs 70,000 crore.
At today’s closing price of Rs 1,523 per share, Reliance Energy is valued at nearly Rs 35,000 crore. The stock has risen over 50 per cent in the past one month.
