Jalandhar, Oct 22: India’s top 14 teams would battle for supremacy in the 24th Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament, to be played here at Olympian Surjit Singh astro-turf hockey stadium, Burlton Park from Oct 26.

The tournament is organised by Surjit Hockey Society in the memory of Olympian Surjit Singh Randhawa, former skipper of the Indian team, who met with a tragic end near Jalandhar on January 7, 1983.


The matches will be played under newly installed floodlights in the stadium by the Punjab government by spending Rs. 1.35 crores, A S Pannu, deputy commissioner and president of the society told reporters adding that the holders Punjab Sind Bank (Delhi), runners up Indian Oil (Mumbai) along with Indian Airlines (Delhi) and border security force (BSF), Jalandhar, would also participate in the tournaments.

Other participating teams include Punjab Police, EME, Jalandhar, Punjab State Electricity Board, (Patiala), Air India (Mumbai), Namdhari-XI, Punjab National Bank (Delhi), Sports Authority Of India (Delhi), Bharat Petroleum (Mumbai), Corps of Signals (Jalandhar) and Rail Coach Factory (Kapurthala), Pannu said adding that the tournament will be played on knockout-cum-league basis.
